Should I Repair or Replace My Air Conditioner? A Mackay Local’s Honest Guide

Repair vs Replace Air Conditioner

Should I Repair or Replace My Air Conditioner? A Mackay Local’s Honest Guide

If your air conditioner has started playing up, the question you’re probably asking yourself is the same one we hear every week here in Mackay: Do I fix it, or is it time to bite the bullet and replace it?
It’s a fair question, and honestly, the answer isn’t always straightforward. A repair might save you money this year but cost you more in the long run. A replacement feels expensive upfront but can pay for itself in lower power bills and no more “is it going to die this summer?” stress.
We’re Hudson Air Conditioning Services, a local family-run business in Mackay. We’ve been doing this for 7 years, and we’ve seen just about every AC scenario you can think of. So we thought we’d put together a straight-up guide to help you work out which way to go — no sales pitch, just the same advice we’d give our own mum.

When Repairing Your Air Conditioner Makes Sense

Sometimes a repair is genuinely the smart move. Here’s when we’d usually tell you to go that way:
  • Your unit is under 8 years old. Modern split systems are built to last 10 to 15 years if you look after them, so a younger unit is almost always worth saving.
  • The repair cost is less than 50% of a new unit. This is the rule of thumb we use ourselves. If it’s well under half the cost of replacement, repair away.
  • It’s a minor fault. Things like a faulty capacitor, an indoor PCB, sensor issues, a blocked drain, or a dodgy remote are usually quick, affordable fixes. (Heads up: outdoor PCBs/fan motors are a different story — they can be pricey, so if that’s the diagnosis we’ll talk you through your options.)
  • You’ve kept up with servicing. A well-maintained unit means the internal bits and pieces are probably still in great nick.
  • It uses R32 or R410A refrigerant. These are current gases — readily available and not expensive to top up if needed.
  • Your warranty is still active. If you bought a Toshiba or Carrier through us, you’ve got 7 years of warranty coverage to lean on.
  • It still cools and heats well when it’s working. If performance is strong on its good days, the bones of the unit are fine.
  • It’s a first-time fault. Not the third callout in two years — just a one-off.
  • The outdoor unit and ducting are in good shape. The expensive infrastructure is intact, so it’s worth keeping.

When Replacing Your Air Conditioner Is the Better Call

And then there are the times when we’ll be straight with you and say — look, you’re throwing good money after bad. Here’s when replacement usually wins:
  • Your unit is 10 or more years old. Older systems chew through more power, and parts get harder (and more expensive) to find.
  • The repair cost is more than 50% of a new unit. At that point you’re better off putting that money toward a brand-new system with a fresh warranty.
  • It runs on R22 refrigerant. R22 has been phased out in Australia. It’s expensive and getting harder to source, so repairs just don’t stack up financially.
  • The compressor has gone. The compressor is the heart of the system. Replacing one often costs more than just installing a new unit.
  • It keeps breaking down. If it’s let you down multiple times recently, more failures are coming. Trust us on this one.
  • Your power bills are climbing. Older units lose efficiency every year. A new high-star-rated inverter system can genuinely cut your running costs.
  • It struggles to cool or heat the room properly. That usually means it’s undersized, worn out, or losing refrigerant. None of those are cheap fixes.
  • Strange noises, smells, or leaks. These are signs of internal damage that’s rarely worth chasing.
  • Rust or corrosion on the outdoor unit. Living in Mackay’s coastal climate is tough on outdoor units. Once corrosion sets in, the unit is usually at the end of its life.
  • The warranty has expired. Pouring money into an out-of-warranty old unit rarely pays off.
  • You’re renovating or extending. Honestly, this is the perfect time to upgrade to a properly sized, modern system designed for your new space.
  • You want lower bills and quieter running. New inverter units are heaps more efficient, much quieter, and they give you proper climate control instead of that old on/off blast of cold air.
